What did you like best about the project?
My favorite part about this project was learning about cocaine, and understanding why it looks the way it does, and reacts the way it does. It opened up a whole new world to me about how everything works, and how much the world is understood through chemistry.
What was the most interesting thing you learned about your eMolecule?
I think the most interesting thing I learned about cocaine was the reactivity that occurs within our brains when cocaine is in our bodies. It is really interesting how it blocks the dopamine receptors which leads to an influx of euphoria and in turn addiction.
What challenges did you face in completing this project?
The hardest part of this eMolecule with my molecule specifically was figuring out the enthalpy of it and the chemical reactions the occur with cocaine.
What did your eMolecule teach you about Chemistry?
My eMolecule taught me really how much our information and how things are formed comes from chemistry. Everything has a molecular structure that makes it the way it is which is so interesting.
How did this project help you see the relevance of chemistry in your everyday life?
The project helped me realize that everything we do or see has chemistry behind it. Everything has intermolecular forces or a structure that make it the way it is and gives it its properties. It makes me see life in a whole different way and now when i see molecular formulas on labels, or in movies, or books i understand what it means.
What is one thing you would like to know more about your molecule?
One thing that i would like to know more about cocaine is the long term side effects.
If you could do one experiment with your eMolecule, what would it be?
One experiment I would like to do with cocaine is determine the brain activity of someone using cocaine vs taking ecstasy because people usually catorgorize those two drugs in the same category.
